  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Ok retelling of a classic story : A classic scifi story, WOTW gets better everytime I read it. I've started reading every 2 years or so at Mars' opposition. That's the best time to view Mars through a telescope. Fortunately, I've never seen any evidence of cannon blasts 😉 I gave the recording four stars because the story is timeless, but this particular recording is not a favorite. The narrator seems to mumble and does not have a lot of expression in the reading. I've not shared this recording with anyone else because I am afraid of boring them with the reading. I guess maybe it's supposed to sound like a stuffy 19th century upper class Englishman. It does but sounds more like someone reading a newspaper out loud rather than someone telling a story. It's ok, but I hope a more lively performance is done someday.... ( Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mensamom -- A Fun Sci-Fi Read For Non-Sci-Fi Fans : I purchased this book as required reading for an English course, and had it not been for that class I probably would never have given this book a second look. First and foremost, I am not generally a science fiction fan. My prefered genres are mystery and historical fiction. I also have many classic books on my personal shelf, including books that were published contemporaneously with "War of the Worlds." Given my love of reading, I am somewhat surprised I have not read this book before now, but space alien invaders are generally not high on my list. BOY, am I glad I had to read this book! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Reinold F. -- Legendary London and Martian invaders. So perfect in the AmazonClassics edition. : (The following paragraph is my explanation about why the AmazonClassics edition is extraordinary. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Meuschke -- A great audiobook : I grew up with the original black and white movie so I was very familiar with the story when the Tom Cruise version came out later which was also a great update. But knowing these didn't prepare me for hearing the classic tale taking which takes place at the turn of the 20th century/late 19th. Well worth your time. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Fulmer -- “The fear and empire of man had passed away” : This is a science fiction classic - the invasion of earth by Martians who come here in cylinders and destroy everything in their path with Heat-Rays. It begins with astronomers noticing explosions on the surface of Mars. A few days later the Martians are landing near London, coming out of their craft, and then killing and destroying almost everything in their path. The army is sent out against them but has few successes. Most of the novel is from the perspective of several ordinary folks who suddenly find themselves running for their lives along with everybody else near London. It shows the way that people are reduced to the position of animals relative to people when a race of beings with superior technology comes to earth. The scenes of chaos and flight are vividly described in a book which is the template for the modern disaster movie. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Woodhouse -- Return to an old classic : Nothing I can say about this book that has not already been said. I first read this when I was 8 years old, and over the past 50 years I have returned again and again to re-read this classic. Each time I think it gets better. The descriptive language used draws the reader in and paints a view of the desolation of London by the Martians which no other book has equalled. Suffice to say, this book is a classic for a reason. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from The Bolt -- Classic science fiction : Having seen the films, I felt it was time to read the source document of the cinematic presentations. The book is far more interesting than the celluloid examples. In fact it is time a genuine portrayal was produced. The double cd featuring Sir Richard burton far more closely follows the plot of H G Wells masterpiece. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GS -- A Classic and a Brilliant Book : Absolutely brilliant book. Having been in Jeff Wayne's musical version, it was a treat to read the book and see just how similar the show is to the original. Despite it being a classic, it is certainly not a difficult read. I would 100% recommend this to anyone, with any reading preferences, as this will tick all boxes. I'm not a fan of the sci-fi genre in any way, however, this has managed to become one of my favourite books. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 29, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from L.W -- a masterful blend of science and fiction. : A brilliantly original tale of alien invasion done through the eyes of two brothers at the turn of the 20th century. The book is pretty horrifying in some of it's detail and the scale of devastation that unfolds, it's also a sort of survivor story too. There's gratefully no forced love story thrown in, as if people would care about stuff like that during something like this. The story feels terrifyingly plausible and is a masterful blend of science and fiction. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pirie Reads -- War of the Worlds by H G Wells : What I love about HG Wells’s books is the fast paced drama and action and this book is no exception. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2021 )
