  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Explanation below for low rating.... : I want to say right off the bat that I am not giving Twain's work one star. I am giving whoever put this edition out one star. Some of the usage was so poor that I knew that it was being translated very poorly. This made me wonder how on Earth an American author needed to be translated into English. For example, when referring to the edges of the river, it said financial institutions.... yes, pretty sure it should have said banks. Later in the book it did say banks, but through the first part of the book it said financial institutions. But what really got me was that e-book was used every time book was mentioned throughout the whole book. Uh, e-books were not around in Twain's time. Finally, towards the end, the most blatant error or whatever you want to call it, it said that someone was playing video games...... Uh, what?? I don't even have words to explain how much this irritated me. So the single star is for this edition, not for the work itself. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2020 )

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kenneth -- Half a Great Book and all Valuable : I've long been an admirer of Mark Twain. Few writers reveal as much of themselves in their work as does Samuel Clemens (Twain). For me, he embodies the American spirit and character in a way that few others do; and "Life on the Mississippi" is Twain at the top of his game. He's a genius at dialogue, recognizes and enjoys the pretensions of people; and will not tolerate hypocrisy. His story-telling technique is wonderful, and he can be very funny. Having said that, Twain's writing can also be uneven, and sometimes a passage of utter beauty can be followed by drivel. That's Twain. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Kraut -- A non-fiction memoir of Twain's early life as a riverboat pilot : First of all, it's Twain. So it is very funny. It is also an important historical look at the place the Mississippi River holds in American economic and cultural development, and also Twain's personal history and growth as a man. Twain loved the Mississippi and so the book is about the river in all its moods and constant changes. To Twain, the river is a living thing. The first part of the book is an autobiographical look at Twain's upbringing and his training as a riverboat pilot with all its vicissitudes, followed by a 20 year jump during which Twain lost his piloting job, beat around at odd jobs, became a reporter and then a best-selling and famous author. Then in part two Twain embarks on a journey as a passenger on one of the last riverboats, after the Civil War and the advent of railroads and barge fleets has reduced the riverboat fleet and the parallel development of the great cities of the Mississippi valley's commercial lifeblood. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janet K. Schwartzkopf -- A Bit of Americana : This is a fun little book that I've recommended to friends. I ordered it for my Kindle based on the enjoyment I got from reading the author's effort on the Erie Canal, and I can't say I was disappointed. I grew up only 20 miles from the Mississippi, but what I didn't know about the Father of Waters could -- and did -- fill a book. I was particularly interested in learning more about the early arrival of steamboats on the Ohio/Mississippi/Missouri river system, how dangerous the travel could be, and how competitive. Certainly Mr. Andrist leans on the experiences and the writing of Mark Twain, but his early experiences as a steamboat pilot go a long way toward explaining just how ever-changing the river could be. Also fascinating to me was the fact that just about anyone could travel by steamboat -- if they were willing to load and unload cargo and help take on wood at every stop. Plus, his accounts of steamboat races had me on the edge of my seat. Talk about a truly dangerous "sport...." In short this is an interesting account of a little bit of Americana that helped settle the heart of the country, but it little covered today. Fortunately, Mr. Andrist helps make up for that. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs. K. M. Hunt -- A mighty river : This book is written in Mark Twain's illimitable and distinctive style and is packed with anecdotes and facts about the river, both at the time he was writing and previously. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 1, 2012 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from WorcesterBlue -- Not my cup of tea : I enjoy reading Mark Twain but this book is about a river. It starts telling of Twain's days as an apprentice steamboat pilot and this is probably the best part of the book. But then it turns to describing how the towns on the Mississippi have changed and stating a lot of facts and figures on prices etc. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. R. H. Webber -- Better than a guide book : If you are planning to do a journey on the Mississippi on a steamboat then read this as it adds considerably to the experience. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 11, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from simony -- Still contemporary and rich in flavour : with the size, shape, hirtage and ever changing nature of the river. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew Ball -- You won't believe it! : This is a truly great book with amazing descriptions of general life, steam voyages and disasters on and around the Mississippi during Mark Twain's lifetime. Some of the statistics and facts are almost unbelievable. I mean, how long do you think it would take to steam from New Orleans to St Louis in the time of the great paddle steamers? Buy the book and find out! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2014 )
