:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from DAVID P. -- Several stories ruined by misprints. : I gave up on several stories as they were impossible to read because of misprints. Amazon likes to call these errors ( Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from PhotoHiker -- Old Style, Stilted Writing : I had never read Henry James previous to to best of my recollection. I found his writing elaborate, but seems stilted. The sentences are long and sometimes I can't discern the meaning. James uses lots of seldom used words making it difficult to understand what he is saying without constantly referring to a dictionary and even then, his intent is unclear. Maybe language has changed too much since his writings? I have to wonder if his vocabulary was really that large or if he constantly referred to a dictionary to find an obscure word to replace more commonly used words. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan -- Like all readers I have my favorites : Since I haven't read the entire collection I feel just a little guilty giving this 5 stars! Like all readers I have my favorites, and Henry James is one of mine. I think probably Daisy Miller is my favorite of his novels, but I have no doubt that I will read ALL that is contained in this collection, and I will find something to love about each one. If you have not as yet met and loved Mr. James -- now is a good time to dive in! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from mllelynne -- Getting to know the man behind the masterpieces. : I am a great lover of the mature James and read his later books at least once a year, always finding revelations anew. This particular biography is one of a two volume set (the other being Henry James: The Young Master) that eschews the popular sport of Freudien analysis of the writer and concentrates more on the factual bases of influences. It is very scholarly and at the same time intensely readable. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020 )

- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Henry Fenwick -- Unread henry James : Of all the James novels I’ve read I think my favorites are The Spoils of Poynton and What Mausie Knew but this was a great opportunity to read ones I knew nothing about like The Princess Cassamassima (fascinating and surprising). - 4.0 out of 5 stars from april -- great collection : marvellous to have at ones fingertips the works of the master...i wonder if he ever let go, in speech or in writing, of a sentence that was not polished, rotund, long and grammatically correct...it would have been fun to hear an anecdote, in which he has said: " faugh!" or "bah!" or simply " by *****!" but, i digress...this collection is very good, well edited, and a comfort to have so easily accessible...good for the thinking skill to dip into, and good for one's language...recommended! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from kingfisher blue -- So far I have read only one story from this ... : So far I have read only one story from this collection, The Last of Valerii. I found James' writing style unpretentious and this story enjoyable. I also found it a well-formatted book well-suited for Kindle. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 21, 2016 )
